The Avengers (2012)
Since 2008 Marvel Studios has been steadily releasing films to build towards 2012's The Avengers . Starting with Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, most recently fans saw Thor and Captain America on the silver screen. Now, the Avengers team can be assembled!
Built upon the stories of Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011); The Avengers will find Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D pulling these super personalities together to form a team that can stop Loki, half brother of Thor. Little else about the plot has been revealed.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
After having awakened from a nearly 70-year coma and finding himself in the 21st century, Steve Rodgers finds himself contacted by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury about an important mission.
Clearly, the super-soldier serum has made cellular aging nearly stop in Rodgers' body, as he is as young as he was when he crashed the Red Skull's jet in the Arctic. It is left to be seen whether Rodgers accepts Fury's offer or not. His current whereabouts seem to be New York City.

Tony Stark / Iron Man
Iron Man (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010)
Last seen in Iron Man 2, Tony Stark had upgraded to the Mark IV version of his Iron Man suit. Now powered by a core made of the element he created based on his father's work, Tony has recovered from the palladium poisoning and taken back control of Stark Industries.
After being studied by the undercover agent Natasha Romanoff, Stark is found to be unfit to be a member of the "Avengers Initiative" but that Iron Man is suitable candidate.

Thor / God of Thunder
Thor (2011)
Upon his return to Asgard to stop his half-brother Loki, Thor destroyed the Bifrost to save Jotunheim from destruction. Now trapped in Asgard and unable to return to Earth (and Jane Foster), Thor has mended his relationship with his father, Odin, and decided not to become king.
Before his apparent death, Loki revealed that there are other ways in and out of Asgard. One of these might be used by Thor to return to Earth, if the path is discovered. Until then, Thor remains in Asgard.

Bruce Banner / Hulk
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
After defeating the abomination that had once been British Royal Marine Emil Blonsky, Bruce Banner once again fled to avoid capture by the US Military. Leaving behind love Betty Ross, Banner is still trying to gain mastery over anger and control the Hulk. He was last located in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada.
Due to failed contract negotiations, Edward Norton has been replaced by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers.

Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Posing as legal counsel for the Stark Corporation, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff infiltrates the company and becomes a personal assistant to Pepper Potts. She observes Tony Stark, bringing team leader Nick Fury to see Tony after Tony's birthday party meltdown/. During the attack on the Stark Expo, Black Widow attacks the guards at Hammer Industries and regains control of War Machine's suit.
Returning in The Avengers, agent Romanoff's role is still yet unclear.

Thor (2011)
The "World's Greatest Marksman", Clint Barton is a top agent at S.H.I.E.L.D. Usually deployed as a look-out due to his master archery skills, Hawkeye first appeared as a guard during the operation surrounding the Mjolnir in New Mexico.
Usually partnered with agent Romanoff, Hawkeye is currently on guard duty to protect the tesseract cube.
